DOCTOR DANâS LAB was very quiet. Dev felt relieved when they went inside, and the doors slid shut behind them. She watched Tayler run over to the models and stand on his tiptoes to look inside. âHe looks a bit like you.â
Jess was behind the main console, pecking at the control surface. She looked up and over it at Dev. âYeah.â She looked back down. âThis is crock, Devvie. I canât do anything with it.â
Dev came over and joined her and took the stool next to her. She leaned on the console. âThe transmitter is down. See, here.â She pointed at the screen. âAll those pending messages are waiting in queue.â
âFix it?â Jess slid out of the seat and offered it to her.
âI donât think we can from here.â Dev took over the input pad. âThe transmitters need the station to be on exact sync to go online. With all the disruption, that will not happen in the short term.â
Jess frowned. âYou canât do it manually?â
Dev looked at her. âPosition station? No. I donât think even Doctor Dan could do that.â
âCrap. I should have taken over that shuttle.â Jess sighed. âWith my luck when they arrived no one triggered the emergency recall because that bastard Doss is in with them.â
âIâll check.â Dev got busy at the console.
Jess watched her for a minute then went over to where Tayler was climbing on the table next to the models to get a better look. âHey, Tay.â
He had both hands on the glass and looked inside. âWhatâs this?â
âThatâs the inside of someoneâs head,â Jess said. âYou want a drink?â
âOh, yeah!â he answered immediately. âDonât like the stuff they have here.â
âNah me neither.â Jess went over to the drink dispenser and looked inside. There were small, sealed cannisters of kack and she smiled in surprise, recognizing them. âAnd neither did the doc.â She took out three of them and opened one, handing it to him. âThere ya go.â
Tayler sniffed it suspiciously, then took a gulp, with evident approval.
âJess,â Dev said, suddenly. âI think you should see this.â
Jess sighed. âWords like that never end well. Something going to blow up again?â
âNo. Itâs a message for you.â Dev looked over at her. âFrom your home place.â
